ah, language

Thanks for the info. I had no idea that retort was an older form of "test tube" in English as well--looks like you know my primary language better than I do!

Re: ah, language

Thanks for the coverage =) No surprise actually - in Russian there is the same old-fashioned word "retort" ("реторта") - probably, taken from another language. Nowadays it's called "пробирка" which is the equivalent for test-tube.

Re: ah, language

Ough, I've stupidly missed it - the same Oxford http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/retort_2?view=uk gives "ORIGIN Latin retorta, from retorquere ‘twist back’ (with reference to the backward-bending neck of the glass container)."

Re: ah, language

P.S. And yes you were right, "обновление" is a good translation for "update" =)

Re: ah, language

Glad I got it right...the automated translators are good for one word but not so much for a whole paragraph. I tranlated the first paragraph of my обновление from English to Russian and then back to English and it gave me:

Well, it was the true storm of the Russian visitors and information suppliers. First of all, I wish to provide, some HTML-èôèä contacts Ivan Dezherneja's original post and English-speaking page about prince Odoevskaom, both from which Sergey Rublëv has kindly provided in my sickly HTML comments.

Hah! Sickly HTML comments indeed.

You must have a lot of LJ followers, by the way. I still have hoards of Russian IPs in my traffic stats.

Кстати, можно еще упомянуть публикацию переписки всяких Энгельсов с Каутскими как изобретение эхо-конференций.
А выкрики Шарикова "Еще парочку!" как материнский прообраз фразы "Дайте две!".

more Odoevski links

Thought you might like to see this (extremely misguided and uninformed) article about Odoevski (http://www.axcessnews.com/modules/wfsection/article.php?articleid=6409) and this Finnish blog post (http://mettemamma.blogspot.com/2005/11/metabloggausta.html) on the same.
